Matavitatau (Bel) "Taeda Inversa" Digipak CD

The Belgian band Matavitatau blends a long-fostered love for 1990s-style Norwegian black metal with a deep passion for classical literature. They forge their lyrics exclusively in Latin, sourcing them from Roman poets from classical, medieval and renaissance times. Their overarching concept focuses on human mortality, the inevitability of decay, and existential darkness. The band's name itself derives from a mysterious exclamation in Petronius's infamous novel Satyrica. In their five years of existence, the members of Matavitatau have been honing their craft in the shadows, treating their project as a scholarly, ritualistic and relentless exploration of the concept of death and the many ways people of various ages have been trying to get a grasp on it. Musically, this is translated into a raw, lo-fi but still melodic soundscape that evokes the atmosphere of a dark monastic mass led by dynamic, liturgical, menacing vocals.
